about

These works were developed over a semester of study into the acoustic properties of ice. The first track involves the use of pre-recorded sounds of ice melting as well as of sine waves matching resonant frequencies within the ice. Through these resonant frequencies, the water surrounding the ice creates a "crackle" that bears a timbral and material connection to the sound of ice melting, which was captured using a piezo disc.

The second track is a lengthy recording of the sound of ice melting, the same recording that is used in the first track. This was achieved by pouring boiling hot water onto ice.

This work was inspired by The Book of Ice by the Evgeny Masloboev Ensemble, who built an entire ensemble of instruments out of ice. It's a great album.
