“A cairn is a collection of stones on a trail that point the direction in which to go. In turn, these works are somewhat autobiographical, in that they track aesthetic change and growth over time.” - Jeremy Rosenstock.

cairns, book four is the new work for speaking and singing pianist by Los Angeles-based composer-performer Jeremy Rosenstock. Jeremy’s work draws inspiration from the diverse worlds of free improvisation and sound art, and this piece is part of a larger collection which explores aspects of duration in the context of the piano’s resonance and sustain. This cairn is subtitled “Piano Sonata?” and calls into question the sonata as a major “statement.” The work synthesizes elements from across the composer’s previous works, dwelling between the theatrical and spectral, and finding influence from “Wandelweiser” and “Plainsound” aesthetics in the process.
